Bd6: Witney 2 vs Cumnor 1, 4th October 2010

1. b3 An off-beat opening to compensate for lack of opening theory on my part. . . 1... e5 2. Bb2 Nc6 3. Nf3 d6 4. e4 Nf6 5. d3 Be7 6. Be2 O-O 7. O-O Nd4 Black felt this opened things up at expense of a pawn; I'm not sure it is really justified. 8. Nxd4 exd4 9. Bxd4 Be6 10. c4 Qd7 11. f4 Bg4 12. f5 cutting off the stray Bishop and forcing the swap-off, plus I keep the kingside advance going at the same time 12... Bxe2 13. Qxe2 Qd8 14. Nd2 Nd7 15. Kh1 placing the king safely in the corner to prepare for further advances 15... Bf6 16. Bxf6 Nxf6 17. g4 Nd7 18. Rg1 f6 19. Nf3 h6 20. Nd4 Qe7 21. Ne6 a nice square for the Knight 21... Rfc8 22. d4 g5 23. Qg2 Nf8 24. d5 Nd7 24... Nxe6 25. fxe6 doesn't improve the cramped position for Black 25. Qh3 Kh7 26. Qh5 not the strongest move as Rg3 probably better, but setting up a trap... 26... Ne5 27. Rg3 Qf7 28. Qxh6+! a Queen sacrifice. Black resigned as mate now inevitable in 2 or 3 moves as after 28. ...Kxh6 29. Rh3+ Qh5 30. Rxh5 the Black king has no spaces to move to. 28... Kg8 also falls to Rh3 followed by Qh8 mate. 1-0 [Patrick Moss]
