Rate of Play: Each
player will be allowed 20 minutes plus 10
seconds increment per move for the game (15
minutes with no increment per player per game in
the Minor section, in which two games per round
with alternating colours will be played).
The organisers reserve the
right to change times of rounds if circumstances
permit. Clocks will be used (instructions on how
to use clocks will be given if required before
the start of the tournament).
Qualification for Entry:
Players in the Junior Minor should know how the pieces move,
including castling, pawn promotion and the ‘en
passant’ rule. They should be under 18 on 1st
September 2018.
Late Arrival for Any
Round: Players arriving after the re-pairing
time of any round may be deemed to have lost by
default, unless the controller can pair them
satisfactorily. Players whose opponents have not
arrived must expect to be re-paired.
Entry Fee: The basic
entry fee is £10.00, one of the lowest entry fees
in England for an event of this kind. For the
Open and the Junior Major section only, please add a pay to play
congress fee of £7.50 if you are not an
ECF member at Silver level or above for the
2019-20 membership year.
If you enter on the day an
additional £6.00 will be added.
Tournament Arrangements
The tournaments will be run using a SWISS
system.
(Junior section) For those
not familiar with the system; if your child
loses their first round, they are almost certain
to play someone else who has lost their first
round. Thereafter, they play people on roughly
equal points to them. The advantage of this
system is that very quickly children end up
playing others of the same ability and the
likelihood of your child losing all his/her
matches is very low.
Open and Junior Major
results will be submitted for ECF rapidplay
grading and (for the first time this year at no
extra cost).

tournament with a small bookstall and also to
offer advice to junior chess players and
parents.
Location:
The school is in Marlborough Lane, which is on
the right hand side as one proceeds down Corn
Street from the east. If coming by bus from
Oxford, the S1 and S2 buses (Stagecoach) stop at
Buttercross in the Centre of Witney just a few
yards from the school.

available on site. There is also unrestricted
parking in Corn Street, Church Green and the
other streets nearby.

Prizes: Lots of
trophies, medals and certificates! In addition,
there will be good quality trophies for
permanent retention for the top three places in
each section. Ties will be broken using sum of
progressive scores, followed by sum of
opponents’ scores if needed.
Refreshments: These will be available
on the premises, provided by Hacketts Outside
Catering Ltd.

Sections (Junior event): If entries
permit, we will separate entries into:
(a) a
Minor section for under 50 ECF grade/ungraded
players;
(b) a Major section which is open to
all players, whether graded or ungraded. If your
child is eligible for both sections, please
indicate on the entry form which section you
would like him/her to play in.
Child supervision: Due to the limited number of
personnel, the responsibility of supervising
children remains that of their parents or other
responsible adults.
If this is your child’s
first chess tournament, we recommend you remain
on site until your child is settled and
preferably for the whole day, as chess
tournaments can be quite tiring for children not
used to them.
The tournament is organised by
those with experience of dealing with children
and running chess tournaments.
Terms and Conditions:
The submission of an entry
form and payment of the entry fee denotes
acceptance that the organisers' decision is
final in all matters to do with the congress.
It is a condition of entry
that all players must have read and comply with
the Fair Play Guidelines and these Terms and
Conditions and the organisers shall have no
liability (whether in contract, tort or
otherwise) in relation to their implementation
of the rules as set out in the Fair Play
Guidelines and these Terms and Conditions.
All players shall consent to
their details being shown on the Witney Chess
Club website. Those wishing to withhold their
consent shall not be permitted to play in the
congress.
In all sections there is a
pay to play fee of £5.00 for players who are not
ECF members or supporters. Players should if
possible include on the entry form:
(a) A FIDE rating; or
(b) An ECF grade or other
national rating; or
(c) An ECF rapidplay grade or
other national rapidplay rating.
Players in the Open section
without a current FIDE rating or ECF grade
should give details of estimated playing
strength, including any previously held grading,
or current grading from another body. Players
who receive a sanction during the congress may
not receive a trophy. The organisers reserve the
right to refuse any entry without explanation.
No player may win more than one trophy.
In all sections the best
performance prize will be awarded to the player
with the highest score beneath a certain grading
limit as determined by the Chief Arbiter. Should
this be a tie, the prize will be awarded to the
lowest-graded player.
Ungraded and unrated players
may not win a best performance trophy.
Results, pairings and
players' real names and Lichess user names will
be shown on
www.chess-results.com. If entrants withdraw
before the congress, they will be entitled to a
refund of their entry fee. The number of
trophies may be changed subject to numbers of
entries.
All games will be published.
The organisers reserve the right to transfer
players between sections at any time.
